Since taking office, 107 foreigners have been deported, according to Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, as part of the government’s continuous campaign against illegal mining, or “galamsey.”
Speaking to the media, Minister Muntaka underlined the government’s resolve to stop illicit mining, which has negatively affected the nation’s economy and environment.
In addition to deportations, he said that he has instructed the Inspector-General of Police to remove all district, divisional, and regional police commanders who are based in mining districts right away.
The Minister claims that the purpose of this instruction is to replace long-serving officials who have failed to adequately address the galamsey threat.
“The decision to transfer these commanders stems from their prolonged stay in mining areas, where illegal mining continues to thrive. We need new faces and fresh perspectives to address this challenge,” Minister Muntaka said.
He added that stricter measures would be implemented to protect Ghana’s natural resources and emphasized that the government is still committed to combating illicit mining.
