Ahead of Saturday’s general elections, the Ghana Freedom Party’s (GFP) national executives have uniformly declared their support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its candidate, John Dramani Mahama.
Jerry Offei Addo, the Deputy General Secretary of the GFP, stated at a news conference in Accra on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, that the decision was based on how well the GFP’s goals aligned with the main campaign policies of the NDC.
He cited programs like the construction of a Women’s Development Bank, free tertiary education for disabled people, and a 24-hour economy as being in line with the GFP’s emphasis on the advancement of women and the empowerment of the poor.
The party’s acting national chairman, national organizer, and national youth organizer joined Mr. Offei Addo in denying that the endorsement was a one-sided choice or that the late founder and former flagbearer, Akua Donkor, would have objected. He underlined that the party’s choice was consistent with its larger goal and ideals, even though she had historically criticized John Dramani Mahama.
He emphasized that the decision was made in the best interests of the country and the party’s members, further dispelling rumors that the GFP’s endorsement was impacted by outside pressure from the NDC. Mr. Offei Addo declared, “We have already begun campaigning for the NDC,” restating the GFP’s resolve to see the NDC win the next election.
Following a similar endorsement by the People’s National Convention (PNC) a week ago, the GFP’s support strengthens the NDC’s campaign as the nation prepares to cast its ballots this weekend.
