Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has accepted defeat to John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), despite the fact that Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) has not yet formally declared the outcome of the elections held on December 7.
Dr. Bawumia congratulated Mr. Mahama during a news conference on Sunday, December 8, 2024, recognizing his overwhelming lead in the polls.
“I just called His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to send him my congratulations as the Republic of Ghana’s president-elect,” Dr. Bawumia disclosed.
“The people of Ghana have spoken; the people have voted for change at this time, and we respect that decision with all humility” Bawumia stated.
Dr. Bawumia went on to say that he made the concession because he wanted to keep the peace and prevent more tensions in the nation.
“The aim of my concession speech prior to the official announcement by the EC is to avoid additional tension and maintain our nation’s peace,” he clarified.
Although final collation was still in progress, he pointed out that the NDC had won both the presidential election and the majority in Parliament.
“Former President Mahama and the NDC have won the presidential election decisively, while the NDC has also won the parliamentary election, although they are still waiting for the final collation.”
“I believe those results will not change the whole outcome” Dr Bawumia said.
