The proposal by the Electoral Commission (EC) to reschedule the general elections from December 7 to November will not be implemented this year.

Eric Asare Bossman, the Deputy EC Chairman overseeing Corporate Services, says that Parliament will soon be presented with the necessary legislation to make this change effective for future elections.
“So within the last few months, this is something the Commission is going to trigger,” Dr Bossman disclosed it in an interview with Joynews.

The Commission suggested the new date and the possibility of declaring the election days national holidays in January.

On Monday, January 22, 2024, at the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, these proposals were made.

In support of an earlier election month, the Commission emphasized that making election days national holidays could boost public participation and help foster a stronger democratic culture.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) was among the Ghanaians who opposed this idea, though.
They clarified that it is incompatible with the agreement made that any significant changes to the electoral process should begin in November 2028.

Deputy EC Chairman, Dr Asare Bossman, while clarifying the matter on JoyNews stated that the move is not expected to be implemented during this year’s polls.

“That was agreed with the political parties that in the event we cannot marshal the forces of IPAC to have it in November in 2020, the commission should take steps to ensure that in 2028, we are going to have it in November,” Dr Asare said.
