Claims that the NPP lost the general elections on religious reasons have been characterized as “propaganda” by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former vice president of Ghana and the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2024 elections.

Following the NPP’s defeat in the December polls, some parts of the party stated that they lost the elections because of the religious affiliation of their candidate with this accusation reportedly aimed at undermining the former vice president.

Speaking to NPP supporters on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at the party’s headquarters before their statewide Thanksgiving tour kicks up this weekend, Dr. Bawumia refuted the allegations as unfounded, saying “some people said that they didn’t vote for us because our presidential candidate was Muslim. Have you not heard that? When I heard that, I said this doesn’t make sense. This is not the Ghana that I know”.

“Because if you look at it, we went for primaries; we were 10 contestants. I was 1 Muslim and 9 Christians but the NPP voted for the 1 Muslim for the presidential candidate” he added.

“So that could not be the case and I decided to do some data analysis to test this hypothesis and when you look at the data, it is very clear. In many constituencies across the country, the NPP presidential candidate performed better than the Christian parliamentary candidate. So, it couldn’t be the case. If they were voting on religion, I shouldn’t be performing better than many of the party’s Christian parliamentary candidates.”

Dr. Bawumia also gave the example of the Central Region’s Assin South Constituency, where he received more votes than the reverend minister running for parliament.

“My good friend, Rev Ntim Fordjour, he is a reverend father but I did better than him in his constituency. He did so well and mobilised the votes for me and I thank him very much,” he stated.

The former vice president also cited post-election studies conducted by several organizations, all of which have denied the idea that the NPP’s failure was due to religious or ethnic reasons.

Dr. Bawumia stated that “those issues have been ruled out in all the findings of different surveys that have been done,” and that Ghana should proceed without prejudice based on religion or tribe.

“So, as a party and country, I’m very happy that religion and tribe have not entered our political discourse. We should therefore not allow people to play propaganda with religion and tribe. We are one nation. We will all love together whether we are Muslims or Christians. We will all work together for the good of this country”, he said.
