As the national elections on December 7 draw near, the Greater Accra Regional Police Command has called on all Ghanaians to be cautious and obey the law.

Although the police do not want to make arrests, they would enforce the law if required to maintain order, they said in a statement reaffirming their commitment to keeping the peace during the election period.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Arhin Kwasi Annor, the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, recently met with representatives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ayawaso East and Ayawaso North constituencies. He emphasized that a peaceful election depends on political leaders acting responsibly and encouraging their supporters to follow the law.

To allay any suspicion of bias in law enforcement, DCOP Annor explained that the police do not take pleasure in making arrests. The police encounter with leaders of the NDC and NPP is a component of a larger initiative to strengthen ties with political parties in the run-up to the election.

He urged party leaders to use their power to encourage their people to follow the law, pointing out that a peaceful election is advantageous for both political parties and the country at large.

“Let’s continue to comport ourselves. We live in a country where there are laws and laws and regulations and it behoves everybody who lives in the country, to respect the laws of the country. If you respect the laws of the country, you will not have any problems with any police officer.

“But then if you decide to do otherwise, that is where the problem will come. And we sitting here, nobody takes delight in punishing people. Nobody can just arrest you when you have not committed any offence. So please, let us comport ourselves. Let’s respect the laws of the country. Let’s act within the confines of the laws of the country.”
