John Mahama, the former president, has emphasized the necessity of reviving public trust in Ghana’s institutions.
Mahama underlined that it is our joint duty to restore faith in government, citing a recent Afrobarometer report that shows significant disenchantment among Ghanaians.
In her remarks at the Good Governance and Accountability Forum on Thursday, October 31, 2024, Mahama described intentions to revise public officeholder standards of conduct in order to encourage moral leadership and improve the public sector’s ability to respond to the demands of its constituents. Mahama pledged to fight corruption in government agencies by enacting and enforcing the updated Internal Audit Agencies Bill.
Taking stock of the last eight years, he denounced the present government for consistently compromising the independence of important institutions, such as the electoral commission and the judiciary, for political purposes.
He bemoaned the culture of fear that has caused journalists to self-censor, pointing out the negative effects on press freedom and human rights.
Mahama expressed hope that change may occur under his direction in spite of these obstacles.
In order to reestablish good governance in Ghana, he promised to cooperate with traditional leaders, civil society, and development partners.
Mahama suggested realigning and combining ministries in order to reduce the number of ministers to no more than 60 in order to simplify government operations. Additionally, he announced intentions to create an Independent Emoluments Commission to rectify the discrepancies between public servants and Article 71 officeholders and to ban ex-gratia payments.
Mahama urged for the improvement of independent constitutional organizations, such as the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the National Media Commission, in an effort to fortify democratic supervision.
Along with reaffirming his commitment to finishing the constitutional revision process, he emphasized the significance of a strong regulatory framework for political party finance.
