Ernest Kumi of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been declared the Member of Parliament-elect for the Akwatia constituency by the Electoral Commission (EC), capping an extensive and controversial electoral process.
His primary rival, National Democratic Congress (NDC) member Henry Yiadom Boakye, received 17,206 votes, compared to 19,269 votes for him.
Several failed attempts to settle the findings in the Eastern Region were followed by the announcement at the National Police Training School at Tesano in Accra.
In the election on December 7, Akwatia, which has historically been a bastion for the NPP, became a center of political drama. Due to disagreements, hold-ups, and allegations between the NDC and NPP, a routine collation process became into a hotly debated issue that attracted national attention.
The constituency was one of four that had its election results moved to the National Police Training School in Accra for final compilation, along with Suhum, Nsawam, and Fanteakwa North.
After growing tensions and logistical difficulties in the Eastern Region hampered the early collation efforts, the decision was made to move. The EC moved the collation process to a safe and neutral location because to concerns about unrest and allegations of irregularities.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC), meanwhile, has said that it will not accept the EC’s decision. In an interview, party member Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor stated that the party will not recognize Mr. Kumi’s election as the MP-elect for the Eastern Region’s Akwatia constituency.
