Concerns have been raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding the Electoral Commission’s (EC) re-collation and re-declaration of several parliamentary candidates in the just ended general elections of 2024.
Three constituencies in the Eastern Region were gathered at the National Police Training Centre in Accra by the Electoral Commission due to persistent arguments over some of the parliamentary results.
During a press conference held at the party’s headquarters today, Friday, December 13, NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah called the procedure unlawful, claiming that it lacked legal support and agreement from all stakeholders.
“We in the NDC believe that what is happening at the Police Training School amounts to illegality,” he said. “It is not founded on any laws of our elections, neither is it based on any consensus that has been reached between the parties and the Electoral Commission.”
In his explanation of the constitutional and procedural framework for election declaration, Chairman Asiedu Nketiah emphasized that although the EC Chairperson has the power to announce presidential results, only Electoral Commission officials at the constituency level are able to announce parliamentary and constituency results. He underlined that it is illegal to deviate from this procedure.
He also claimed that by providing protection for the recollation process, the police were helping the EC “perpetrate illegalities.” He claims that this recollection is without legal foundation and was carried out without the NDC’s knowledge or consent. He advised the participating police and EC officials to think about the consequences of their conduct in the future.
In his remarks, he advised chiefs in certain constituencies to refrain from meddling in the election process.
Chiefs are prohibited from actively engaging in politics by the constitution, he reminded them, and he threatened to treat them like politicians if they persisted in meddling.
He rejected any attempt to teach the NDC on democracy, stating, “We need no lectures on democracy from him,” in response to assertions made by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the leader of the NPP caucus in parliament. But we’ll let him give us a lesson on impunity.
Anyone attempting to commit election fraud using state institutions was strongly cautioned by the NDC Chairman.
