Thirteen candidates have received formal approval from the Electoral Commission (EC) to run in the 2024 presidential election.

The EC has authorized candidates from a variety of political backgrounds, including major party candidates and a number of independents, following what it described as a rigorous screening procedure.

Following months of political campaigning and EC qualification checks to make sure each candidate fulfilled the necessary requirements, the announcement was made.

Among the disqualified candidates stands Bernard Mornah of the People’s National Convention, who had pledged that his organization was going to break the leadership duopoly the country had to endure.

Two prominent approved candidates are John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Both candidates hope to win over voters with promises of increased social services, better infrastructure, and economic reform.

Apart from these well-known figures, a number of novice contenders have surfaced, standing for smaller parties and independent platforms and seeking to take on the political establishment with novel concepts and an innovative outlook on governance.

The Electoral Commission in a press statement issued on Friday, September 20, emphasised that the selection process was conducted with the utmost fairness and transparency.

All candidates had to submit detailed documentation, including their financial records, citizenship status, and nomination forms, which were rigorously scrutinized.
