3 persons arrested for smuggling 250 bags of Planting for Food and Jobs fertilizers

250 bags of government-subsidized fertilizer intended for farmers were inside an articulated truck that was stopped by a joint team from the Ghana Police Service and National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in Assin Fosu.

The fertilizer, which is composed of cocoa ahuoden, aduane, and nti, was purportedly being shipped to Ivory Coast, a neighboring nation.

On Wednesday, August 16, 2023 in Assin Juaso, the three suspects—Seth Yeboah, a driver; Smaila Ahor, a house boy; and Iliasu Abubakar, a driver with the Ghana National Ambulance Service in Assin North—were detained. They were taken to the NIB headquarters in Accra to help with the investigation.

According to Nana Kwasi Fori, the Central Regional Chief Farmer, the staff at the NIB in Assin Fosu have been keeping an eye on the suspects’ whereabouts for a while.

As a result, on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, they received information that a truck with the license plate GW-9930-W, filled with fertilizer, had become stuck in the middle of its journey.

He claimed that the NIB officer alerted the police and then detained them after learning that the vehicle’s contents included fertilizer that was possibly being smuggled.

It was discovered during the interrogation that the other two suspects were hired by the ambulance driver Iliasu Abubakar.

Therefore, Nana Ofori issued a warning to everyone participating in this criminal act, including the farmers who colluded with these miscreants, warning them to stop or face the full force of the law, including arrest and prosecution.

He also urged members of the public to notify the Ghana Police Service of any suspected crimes so that appropriate action may be taken.
