The heads of Agona Swedru Technical Institute in the Central Region, Sunyani Technical Institute in the Bono Region, and Madina Technical Institute in the Greater Accra Region have been placed under interdiction by the Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service due to claims of extortion and unlawful fee collection at their respective institutions.
The Ghana TVET Service said in a statement that credible reports showed that some of the institutions were charging unapproved fees, such as admission fees, boarding protocol payments, fees for changing residential status from day to boarding, fees for fashion practical items, bed-sheet payments, and levies related to PTA. This prompted investigations.
The government’s Free TVET Policy, which ensures free access to technical and vocational education, was cited by the Service as being violated by these actions. It emphasized that such actions are counter to its dedication to transparency and equity in the admissions process.
Management has responded by forming investigating committees to carry out a thorough and objective investigation into the claims. The committees’ makeup will be revealed when the time comes, and the final disciplinary measures will be based on their recommendations.
With immediate effect, the heads of the impacted institutions have been instructed to take a 30-day administrative leave of absence
To maintain continuity in school administration, their duties have been transferred to the appropriate Regional Directors.
The Regional Directors who have been handed additional responsibilities include: Madam Hannah Asamoah, Central Regional Director – Agona Swedru Technical Institute; Mr. Gabriel Gyamfi, Bono Regional Director – Sunyani Technical Institute; and Engr. Juliana Nkrumah, Greater Accra Regional Director – Madina Technical Institute.
The Ghana TVET Service reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on corruption and misconduct, stating that it remains steadfast in safeguarding accountability, fairness, and professionalism across all Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions.
“Management remains resolute in upholding accountability, transparency, and fairness in the management of Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions across Ghana.
We further assure parents, students, and the general public of its unwavering commitment to maintaining the integrity of the admission process and protecting the interests of learners nationwide,” the statement added.
