The government has been handed a 10-day ultimatum by three public university worker unions to pay them portions of their Vehicle Maintenance Allowance or risk strike action.
Demanding better working conditions is the course of action, according to the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC), the Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Senior Staff Association Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG).
In a press release issued on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, the unions stated that their employer’s inability to pay them the agreed-upon allowance had made the strike inevitable.
In an interview with Ghanatodayonline reporter Jacob Agyenim Boateng, Mr. George Ansong, the chairman of the Senior Staff Association Universities of Ghana, stated that if their concerns are not addressed, the unions will go on an indefinite strike on June 21, 2024.
“We are giving a notice to the Fair Wages Commission of Ghana that we will be compelled to advise ourselves if government fails to rectify the disparity with regards to our members unpaid Vehicle Maintenance Allowance,” Ansong said.
