In accordance to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) report, 3,228 Ghanaians are among the more than 1.4 million foreign nationals on the U.S. deportation list.

According to the most recent data from November 2024, 1,445,549 people are in danger of being removed, with a substantial portion coming from different African nations. These include:

3,690 Nigerians 3,93 Ugandans, 1,035 Gambians, and 1,282 Kenyans 60 Gabonese, 427 Togolese, and 1,897 Guineans

The impacted individuals, known as “aliens,” are being deported for a number of reasons, according to ICE, including as not having proper documentation, not claiming a credible fear of return, or having a negative credible fear finding upheld by an immigration judge.

ICE listed logistical difficulties, legal impediments, and diplomatic barriers as the main reasons for the delays in deporting some people with final removal orders, however the agency could not provide specific explanations.

This move is consistent with President Trump’s larger campaign against undocumented immigrants, which has drawn criticism and raised questions about how it may affect African immigrant communities in the United States.

ICE has the authority to remove noncitizens with final removal orders under Title 8 of the U.S. Code. However, each case’s unique circumstances can make enforcement more difficult.

Regarding the deportation list, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has not yet provided an official statement. Nonetheless, the revelation has spurred a lot of debate about what it means for Ghanaian deportees and their family back home.
