The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has announced that 380 commercial drivers have been caught for imposing unauthorized fares on passengers.

He stated that the operation commenced in November 2025 as an element of a larger initiative to uphold fare regulations throughout the Christmas period.

He also disclosed that the Regional Coordinating Council is negotiating with the Ministry of Transport to obtain more bus assistance for the Christmas celebrations.

In a Facebook post, the Minister announced that “since the previous month, 380 drivers have been apprehended for collecting an unauthorized fee.” We are in discussions with the Ministry of Transport regarding bus assistance.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has also sent a task force to address unapproved fares on the city’s roads.

Henrietta Afia Konadu, the Public Relations Officer for KMA, stated that the task force, following the Kumasi Mayor’s directive, will carry out spot inspections and ensure adherence to the sanctioned fare schedule.

“The mayor has directed us to enhance supervision and guarantee that drivers comply with the established rates,” Konadu stated. “Our officers will patrol the streets, and any driver discovered imposing unlawful charges will encounter the full extent of the law.”

The regional and municipal authorities stressed that the actions aim to safeguard passengers and uphold order during one of the peak travel times of the year.

They encouraged the public to notify the appropriate authorities about any cases of fare overcharging.
