Four independent Members of Parliament (MPs) have chosen to work with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Majority Caucus in the House, according to a statement released by Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Majority Chief Whip.
However, he pointed out that the Majority Caucus had not yet formally informed the Speaker of the MPs’ decision.
“Mr Speaker, the four colleagues of ours who are in this House as independent MPs indeed communicated to our caucus to caucus with us in doing business on the floor,” he said.
The four are Worlasi Kpeli, an NDC member who ran as an independent for Afram Plains North; Kwame Asare Obeng, also known as Kwame A Plus, for Gomoa Central; Nandaya Yaw Stanley for Wulensi; and Dr. Ohene Kwame Frimpong for Asante Akim North.
The four independent Members of Parliament are unable to form a third force in the House because their numbers do not add up to seven. As a result, in accordance with House rules, each of them must formally write to the Speaker to notify him of their choice to sit and conduct business with the Majority Caucus.
This was revealed by Mr. Agbodza during a debate about the makeup of the Parliamentary Selection Committee today on the floor of Parliament.
The Speaker of Parliament will chair the 17-member committee, which will be in charge of choosing MPs for the House’s numerous committees. Twelve of the 17 members will be in the majority, and five will be in the minority.
Kwame Governs Agbodza, Comfort Doyoe, Ebenezer Terlabi, Isaac Ashai Odamtten, Emmanuel Kojo Agyekum, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Dr. Clement Apaak, Shaibu Mahama, Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, and Richael Owusua are among the majority members. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Patricia Appiagyei, Asante Boateng, Habib Iddrisu, and Mustapha Ussif are the members of the minority.
