Contrary to claims made by President Akufo-Addo and his Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman Manu, 5 lives have been lost as a result of the lack of children immunizations, according to the minority in parliament.

Ranking Member for the Committee on Health Kwabena Minta Akandoh cited the head pediatrician at the Tamale Teaching Hospital when discussing the President’s State of the Nation Address and provided statistics on fatalities.

Even though the government was able to obtain some vaccines from Nigeria, the Juaboso MP disclosed that there is still a lack of diagnostic supplies for illnesses common in children, such as measles.

“Mr Speaker, the gigger question is that how come Nigeria has excess vaccines and we don’t have. Mr Speaker I think that we should not even had gotten here in the first place. The vaccines that we have taken delivery of can only last for six weeks. So we should not be making noise that we are coming out of the situation. We should rather be thinking of how to get more vaccines to save the vulnerable babies in this country.”

Mr. Akandoh questioned how the government was able to obtain vaccines from Nigeria if, as the President stated, there was a genuine worldwide scarcity.
