To stop the ongoing limited voter registration drive, five opposition political parties have filed a united request for an injunction.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC), Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Convention People’s Party (CPP), People’s National Convention (PNC), and the All People’s Congress (APC) are the five political groups that have joined forces to bring this injunction.
They claim that the electoral commission’s decision to limit centers for the upcoming Limited Voter Registration exercise to their District Offices was both illegal and unreasonable.
They contend that the EC’s decision to limit the locations of voter registration centers to their district offices could deny many eligible voters the ability to register as voters and cast ballots in public elections.
“A declaration that upon a true and proper interpretation of Articles 45(a) and 42 of the Constitution, the 2nd Defendant’s decision to carry out the 2023 limited/continues voter registration at the District offices of the 2nd Defendant instead of undertaking the same on the basis of electoral areas will result in voter suppression, particularly in rural constituencies of the country, and is thus unconstitutional as it violates the rights of the first-time voters to register and vote”
