Plans for a statewide protest on Monday, May 5, 2025, have been launched by a coalition of Ghanaian political groups, including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and Ghana Union Movement (GUM).

The demonstration is a reaction to what the parties say is the Chief Justice’s “unlawful suspension” and the politically driven dismissals of public sector employees during the current administration.

Following an emergency meeting on Thursday, April 24, 2025, the parties released a unified statement in which they charged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was threatening Ghana’s constitutional order and jeopardizing the judiciary’s independence.

Referencing the purported 2010 conspiracy to oust Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood, the political parties described the development as a blatant assault on democracy and claimed that the current state of affairs mirrors previous attempts by the NDC to meddle in the judiciary.

“The pattern is undeniable. This is not just about one individual—it’s an orchestrated attempt to control every arm of government, including the independent Judiciary,” the statement read.

The group called on religious organizations, civil society organizations, and other well-meaning Ghanaians to participate in the protest, saying it would be a public stand for justice, the rule of law, and constitutional governance.

Concern was also raised in the statement on intelligence indicating that the NDC may be planning to target other constitutional bodies, including removing the chairperson of the Electoral Commission and her deputies.

The parties claim that such measures would pave the way for attempts to reassemble the Supreme Court with loyalist justices in order to read Article 66(2) and allow former President John Mahama to seek a third term in 2028.
