58-year-old woman sentenced to one month in prison for making shito with rotten vegetables

Elizabeth Arthur, a 58-year-old lady who was detained by the police in Koforidua, in the Eastern Region, for making pepper sauce, shito, using decaying vegetables, has been sentenced to one month in jail.

Elizabeth received a GHC4,800 fine in addition to the one-month term, per a news report by UTV.

According to the newspaper, the 58-year-old lady would spend an extra 20 months in jail if she is unable to pay the fine.

It stated that on February 15, 2023, a Koforidua court presided over by Nana Ama Debrah Finn rendered the ruling after the accused entered a not-guilty plea to the charges against her.

Due to her age and illness, her Legal Aid Department attorneys begged the judge to impose a non-custodial term on her, but to no effect.

The 58-year- old’s arrest by the Ghana Police Service in January 2023 for what was seen to be an unsafe method of making shito.

Naana, a lady who sells shito in the city, was discovered by some millers since she frequently visits them to have her ingredients ground.

According to UTV reporter Michael Akrofi, this had been happening for a time until one of the mill workers decided to inform the police so they could investigate.

The reporter went on to say that some of the ingredients Naana uses for her shito include onion peels that are discarded at “chop bars.”
