Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has taken a strong stance against the National Cathedral project, calling the building site the “world’s most expensive swimming pool” and harshly criticizing it.

Dr. Forson vented his dissatisfaction on Tuesday, September 17, on Twitter over the project’s lack of progress. The project has been in development for a number of years, but there hasn’t been any noticeable movement.

Dr. Forson emphasized that the National Cathedral has received large public funding, yet all that is standing at the location is a hole filled with water.

He questioned the project’s administration and the openness of the funding, drawing comparisons between the circumstances and an abandoned galamsey (illegal mining) site.

Millions of dollars have been spent on building and excavation, but the project is still mostly unfinished, Dr. Ato Forson said.

He went on to criticize the government of mismanaging the project, pointing out that so far, about $58 million has been spent on it with few results.

Dr. Forson continued, highlighting the dissatisfaction felt by many Ghanaians, by saying that detractors have started to refer to the incomplete site as a “swimming pool,” given its current status.

In closing, the Minority Leader urged the government to reconsider its goals and reallocate funding to more urgent national concerns including infrastructure, healthcare, and education, which he feels will help the nation far more than the contentious and stagnant National Cathedral project.

“After breaking down newly-constructed residential buildings of judges, the Passport Office, private properties and claiming to have sunk over $58 million into a so-called National Cathedral, demonstrators had unfettered access to the construction site for the very first time.”

“The expenditure of a $58 million National Cathedral is comparable to an abandoned galamsey site.”

“The world’s most expensive hole had collected so much water that it is now the world’s most expensive swimming pool. Some of the demonstrators had fun swimming in it,” he posted.
