The arrears owing caterers under the Ghana School Feeding program, according to Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, have been paid.
The payment, according to the minister, took care of the caterers’ back payments for both the first term of this year and the third term of the academic year 2022.
On Monday, July 31, 2023, while giving a review of the 2023 budget, he made the statement in front of the House of Parliament but omitted to include the financial details.
“We have also settled all arrears owed to caterers under the [school feeding] programme for the period of the third term of the 2022 academic year and the first term of the 2023 academic year,” Mr Ofori-Atta said.
The minister added that the number of beneficiaries under the Ghana School Feeding program has grown significantly from 1.6 million in 2016 to 3.8 million in 2023.
He noted that for the academic year 2023, the cost of the food stipend increased from GH1 to GH1.20p each meal, per child, per day.
According to the government, as part of its social intervention programs, the monthly grants to beneficiary homes under the LEAP program were increased from GH32 to GH64 for households with one member to GH38 to GH76 for households with two members.
