The government’s decision to start a new National Affordable Housing Project rather than continuing with the Saglemi Housing project, which was started during the previous John Mahama administration but later stalled due to doubts about its viability, has been justified by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
President Akufo-Addo explained that finishing the Saglemi Housing Project would have placed a significant financial burden on the government while speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the new National Affordable Housing Project in Accra, which aims to build about 8,000 housing units in collaboration with the private sector.
The President disclosed that the Saglemi project’s delays and difficulties had been reported to the Criminal Investigations Division of the Ghana Police Service for investigation, which would result in criminal legal procedures.
Francis Asenso-Boakye, the minister of works and housing, met with representatives from the cabinet, the ministry of finance, and the attorney general’s office to discuss possibilities for finishing the Saglemi project while preventing further degradation.
“It has been established that, in addition to the $198 million already expended on the project, the government would need an additional $46 million to complete the infrastructural works, including water, electricity, and drainage to mitigate flooding. Furthermore, an additional $68 million is required to complete the buildings and other essential onsite infrastructure, such as waste holding bays, sewage treatment plants, and the development of socio-economic and civic infrastructure, such as schools, clinics, and shops” President Akufo-Addo said.
The cabinet gave the Minister of Works and Housing instructions to investigate if private contractors could finish the Saglemi housing project at its present cost without adding to the government’s expenses after taking assessments, the project’s location, and viability into account.
The government’s endeavor to address the housing shortage and offer citizens with affordable housing includes the National Affordable Housing Project. By working together with the private sector, the government hopes to speed up development and make sure that individuals in need can access the housing units.
