Kennedy Agyapong, an outspoken member of parliament for Assin Central, is still unrepentant about his divisive support for the beating of late investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.
Mr. Agyapong explained the context of his remarks in an appearance with Face to Face on Citi TV, saying that he particularly meant to speak to Suale being accosted on the grounds of Net 2 TV.
“I showed the video of Ahmed Suale and when they [ my workers] saw it, my workers came to me and said, Hon. ‘don’t you know this guy, you even gave him Ghc 1,500 to go and pay his school fees’, then I said you have to be careful, if this guy comes here beat him up because he is going to set this company up,” He told host Umaru Sanda Amadu.
When asked if he had any regrets over the conversation, Agyapong replied emphatically, “No, not that I want to be president and I would therefore claim I didn’t say that, No. I didn’t say to beat him up outside; I only stated if he comes to my premises.You are aware of Ahmed Suale’s problems; he committed several errors, and during all the investigations Anas conducted, Anas never revealed his identity. As a result, Ahmed Suale was the one who set up all the individuals that Anas embarrassed in this nation. They never saw Anas’ face; Suale was the one who set up the Finance Minister.
Ahmed Suale, a 31-year-old investigative journalist, works with Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ Tiger Eye PI, an organization renowned for using undercover journalism techniques to uncover corruption and other social evils.
His murder in Accra in January 2019 shocked the media industry and terrified many journalists, several of whom declared openly their fear for their lives.
The country’s long-promised safe atmosphere for the practice of journalism was stifled by that one episode, which also altered the face of investigative journalism.
Additionally, it brought attention to additional assaults on journalists committed by members of the public while they were performing their responsibilities and fueled debates about the security of journalists in the nation.
