Only 1% of employees in Ghana’s private sector pay into the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), according to Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang, Director-General of SSNIT.

Only 1.7 million of Ghana’s 11.5 million workers, he claims, are active SSNIT donors.

He claimed that while 36% of workers are in the public sector and 63% are in the private sector, only 1% of the former make contributions to the SSNIT Pension Scheme.

When the SSNIT’s management met with stakeholders to discuss how to better include self-employed workers in the Basic National Social Security Scheme, he revealed this information.

The Accra forum requested support and buy-in from stakeholders for expanding the SSNIT Scheme’s coverage to include independent contractors and workers in the unorganized sector.

He emphasized that this poor coverage is a result of the country’s economy, in which most people run their own enterprises and do not see the need to sign up for a formal social security program.
