The New Patriotic Party must remain unified even after internal elections, according to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, in order to defeat the opposition forcefully in the general elections in 2024.

Dr. Bawumia stated, “I am very humbled and very grateful for this election but this is only the first step of winning the flagbearership of the party, so I know that there is work ahead.” He was speaking to journalists at his home after winning Saturday’s special delegates meeting.

The big event will take place in December 2024, he said, so as everyone works together, we must keep in mind that a victory in December 2024 is what we are aiming for.

“This will require a lot of unity among ourselves and among all the flagbearer hopefuls”, Dr Bawumia pointed out.

He stressed: “It is very important that as we go on this journey towards December 2024, we don’t have cracks in our ranks”.

“We have to all work together and not destroy this very important unity that we have”, he re-emphasised.
First-time flagbearer candidate Kennedy Agyapong placed second during the conference on Saturday, August 26, 2023.

The Assin Central MP received 132 votes, or 14.30% of the total.

With 95 votes, or 10.29%, former trades minister Alan Kyerematen, who has been playing since 2007, finished third

With 629 votes, or 68.15% of the total cast, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, a first-time candidate, defeated his rivals to claim the title of most popular candidate thus far.

Owusu Afriyie Akoto, a former minister of agriculture, is in fourth place with 40 votes, or 4.3% of the total.
With 9 votes apiece (0.09%), former MP Francis Addai Nimoh and former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko tied for fifth place.

A tie-breaker has been set for September 2, 2023 by the party.

The party’s presidential primary, with more than 200,000 delegates, will feature the top five contenders in November.

The results suggest that Mr. Kyerematen’s support for the position has dwindled over time if they are representative of party opinions as a whole.
