The next person to appear before the Ad-Hoc Committee appointed by Parliament to look into an alleged attempt to remove Inspector General of Police George Akuffo-Dampare is COP George Alex Mensah, Director General of Operations for the Ghana Police Service.
On Thursday, August 31, Mr. George Alex Mensah is scheduled to make an appearance alongside two other colleagues.
This comes in response to Daniel Bugri Naabu, the NPP’s Northern Regional Chairman, who asserted that COP George Alex Mensah is the top police officer audible on the audio leak.
In his Monday speech before the Committee, Bugri Naabu stated that his choice to record the discussion regarding the suggested plot was made in order to protect the interests of his party.
The secret tape’s validity was confirmed by Mr. Naabu, who said he intended to send the recording to President Akufo-Addo.
Bugri Naabu also said that Superintendent Gyebi, COP Mensah, and Commander Asare were the officers who spoke with him about the IGP when defending his tape of the conversation.
“The reason for recording this tape is that they are coming to tell me to go and tell the President something that they know they are saying, and it is either I don’t go and tell the President and then I and my party suffer for it, or if I also go to talk to the President, it is good to tell him the right thing, and since I cannot keep everything they were telling me at that point, it was very good to record and I know the President, that if I go and tell him something and it turns out not to be true, next time he won’t give me respect,” Bugri Naabu testified before the 7-member committee of Parliament.
The three must then come before the committee.
The committee’s chairman, Samuel Atta Akyea, reaffirmed this by stating that all three must be present on Thursday.
“Our next sitting is on Thursday. COP George Alex Mensah will appear, Superintendent Asare, and Superintendent Emmanuel Gyebi will also appear. These are the three individuals who will appear on Thursday,” Samuel Atta Akyea added.
Given the nature of the conversation with the senior police officers involved, the information on the leaked recording sparked a nationwide debate.
After receiving criticism from the public, Parliament established the Committee, which is now being investigated by Samuel Atta-Akyea, a member of parliament for Abuakwa South.
The panel’s mandate is to look into both the veracity of the recording that was released and the complex claims that have drawn the attention of the country.
On September 10, the Committee must turn in its report.
