Justin Frimpong Kodua, General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), claims that by bringing some disloyal members before its disciplinary committee, the party has a rare opportunity to be strict and unyielding in upholding the standards guiding the conduct of its members.
Kennedy Agyapong, a candidate for president, Hopeson Adorye, a supporter of Alan Kyeremanten, and three other people are anticipated to answer to accusations of misbehavior made against them.
If they are found guilty, they risk being suspended or kicked out of the party.
Justin Kodua said the party will be resolute in handling the issues before them in a JoyNews interview.
“That the party is governed by rules and regulations and that’s why everywhere I go I carry the party constitution with me. And nobody is above the party constitution. We’re all in NPP because of this constitution, and therefore as implementers of the provisions in the constitution we should be seen to be fair, very neutral, unbiased and also take decisions that will be in the supreme interest of the party,” he said.
While unfortunate, he said that the areas of voting irregularities that surfaced over the weekend during the party’s super delegates’ conference will be addressed in a way that will act as a deterrent in the upcoming elections on November 4.
For example, we can’t have it 100% of the time. There will always be sporadic instances of people trying to break the law or carry out actions that are inherently criminal during elections in Ghana and everywhere else.
“Certain things that happened, there were some comments, some altercations, some issues that happened which we saw on social media, and also from various video evidence that we got which the party was very proactive to issue a statement to that effect, and to also refer to those personalities who were captured in the video to the disciplinary committee,” he said.
The NPP’s Disciplinary Committee met the MP for Assin Central, Ken Agyapong, regarding accusations and threats he made against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and President Akufo-Addo during the party’s Special Delegates Conference on Saturday.
The fiery politician was shown in a viral video threatening to name and shame the two politicians for allegedly inciting his agents to attack agent on Saturday.
Since then, a video showing Ken Agyapong in the midst of an intense phone call has gone viral. As heard in the video, Ken Agyapong says, “I’ll give them a lifetime showdown in this country. President Akufo-Addo and Vice President, I’ll give you all showdown. Why would you chase my agent away from the polling station and on what account? You would surely hear from me. I promise you that I’ll challenge Akufo-Addo anytime.”
Uncertainty surrounds the specifics of the purported altercation between Ken Agyapong’s agent and election officials.
On August 26, 958 delegates from across the country joined the New Patriotic Party to vote for five of the ten presidential candidates.
Four contenders for president made it onto the short list with ease.
Although it was anticipated that the Super Delegates Conference would aid in choosing the final five candidates, two contenders have tied, necessitating the use of a different procedure to choose the fifth candidate.
Kennedy Agyapong received 15.03% of the total votes cast, trailing only the Vice President, who received 68.15% of them.
Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto finished fourth with 3.90%, followed by Alan Kyerematen in third place with 10.29%.
Boakye Kyeremateng Ayarko and Francis Addai Nimo tied for fifth place among the contenders.
Following him with six votes were Kwabena Agyapong, Joe Ghartey, and Kwadwo Poku, who received four and three votes, respectively.
Mr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, the last candidate, received no votes.
