Mahama Ayariga, a member of parliament for Bawku Central, has criticized Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, claiming that regardless of how challenging the circumstances may be, he has a constitutional duty to uphold expectations when citizens are required to demonstrate.
He thinks the IGP’s position is not solely up to him to decide. As a result of the residents’ trust in him to uphold peace and order in the nation, he continues to hold a position of authority and responsibility.
“The IGP is not there on his own. He needs to check to see if he is the IGP by taking off his outfit. No matter how challenging the task, he has a constitutional duty to fulfill expectations when individuals are required to demonstrate. The IGP must provide the demonstrators’ safety, security, and protection even though it will be challenging to do so, according to Mahama Ayariga.
“We cannot offer you the resources, budget, recruit for you, or equip you with logistics such as vehicles, and you claim you are unable to accomplish your job. After the governor of the Bank of Ghana, we will demand the expulsion of the IGP,” he added.
This includes ensuring the security and safety of the general public at diverse gatherings, including peaceful protests.
The congressman emphasized that the IGP must take all reasonable measures to ensure that residents are able to exercise their right to peaceful assembly.
He clarified that the IGP is compensated and given the resources it needs to operate effectively.
He said that if the required resources are available, the IGP cannot refuse to work.
He expressed his disappointment with the work of important government figures, especially the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
He said that the Minority would emphasize how important it is to hold government employees accountable for carrying out their constitutionally mandated tasks and responsibilities.
He pointed out that in order to fulfill the expectations of the public, public authorities, including the IGP, are entrusted with constitutional duties.
According to the MP, it is the IGP’s duty to ensure residents have the necessary safety and security when they exercise their right to demonstrate.
This is essential to ensuring that protests remain peaceful and that individuals or groups looking to disturb the peace are not allowed to do so.
He warned that due of his actions, the IGP would be the next public official to be fired.
