In order to get separate meters and a report on the area of the market that was burned, vendors at the Kumasi Kejetia Market in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti region staged a protest.
On Tuesday, September 5, 2023, the traders protested while wearing red armbands.
As part of a plan to launch a series of rallies against the market’s board management, the traders also hung red bands in front of their stores.
The traders claim that despite several complaints made to the market’s administration and board, nothing has been done to address their requests or the impending water problems.
Reuben Amey, the secretary of the Combined Kumasi Kejetia Market Association, hinted in an interview with media that if management and the market board do not accede to their demands, they will not only lock out management from their offices on September 13, 2023, but also launch a series of protests until something constructive is heard.
Nana Opoku Amankwah, the market’s operations manager, reaffirmed the management of the market’s obligation to the traders.
He emphasized that “management, including the board, has a responsibility to manage the market for profit in order to pay off the loan and two, for traders in Kumasi in order for their businesses to thrive.”
The traders, he continued, want the meter project to get underway because it will relieve some of their stress.
