Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Minister of Energy, received an award on Friday, September 8, 2023 at the 2023 Africa Public Sector Conference and Awards (APSCA) ceremony in Nairobi, Kenya, for his transformational leadership in the energy sector since taking office.

The awards ceremony was held concurrently with the Africa Climate Summit, which brought together heads of state, ministers, senior government officials, and other influential parties to advance discussions on the global climate change agenda, particularly from an African perspective.

Speaking to several groups throughout the Summit, Dr. Prempeh took advantage of the chance to emphasize Ghana’s efforts to cut carbon emissions in line with its commitment to the international climate agenda.

He claimed that these initiatives are part of Ghana’s overall blueprint for achieving net zero.

The Minister, who is also a member of parliament for Manhyia South, spoke about the need of energy efficiency in Africa for the creation of a future energy system that is both inexpensive and clean. He emphasized Ghana’s commitment to energy efficiency, which began in 2005.

“This is when we launched the appliance standards and labelling regime to date where we have passed legislations to back same” he said.

The Minister indicated that the lighting retrofit led to savings of 124MW with 6000 CFLS deployed to replace 6000 incandescent lamps.

The Ghana Education Service’s deputy director general, Dr. Bempah Tandoh, accepted the transformational energy sector leadership award on behalf of the Energy Minister.

In 2022, Dr. Prempeh was honored for his remarkable leadership as the minister of energy when he was named Best Minister for the period under review at the Africa Public Sector Conference and Awards, which were hosted at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel.

This accolade joins a number of others that the Minister has received for his great performance as a public servant, the most recent of which was an honorary doctorate degree awarded to him by the University of Cape Coast in recognition of his outstanding leadership.
