Following the quarry explosion in Shama last Sunday, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) undertook a significant reorganization that included the transfer of the Western Regional Director and others.
The Western Regional Director, Dr. George Diawuo, has been asked to go to the EPA’s headquarters in Accra for re-assignment in a letter dated Wednesday, September 13, 2023, written by the organization’s Executive Director, Dr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu. A copy of the letter was intercepted by Ghanatodayonline.com
Shan Fiagome, the Central Regional Director, will take over duties in the Western Region.
There have also been changes to other regional directors, including the Regional Director for Ashanti.
Samuel Oteng, the regional director for Ashanti, will be relocating to Accra West in Amasaman.
Omanhene Kwaku Boateng of the Ada area is transferring to the Central Region, while Dr. Jackson Adiyie of Ahafo is relocating to Ashanti.
Mrs. Sally Biney, the director of Accra West in Amasaman, relocates to Accra East in Tema.
Irene Opoku, the director of Accra East, is now in charge of operations at the headquarters.
There will likely be more transfers in the future, according to the EPA director.
The EPA and the police are currently conducting a hunt for the co-owner of the quarry that exploded in Shama last Sunday.
The second owner, who was purportedly on the property at the time of the occurrence and was a Chinese national, is said to have perished in the explosion.
The EPA has been able to contact with some employees who claimed they were not on the site at the time of the event and added they had only recently started working for the company through the assembly member of the area.
However, they have offered the co-owner’s contact information, which is a Ghanaian who is purportedly based in Accra.
The police, EPA, and Minerals Commission agents were able to reach him on the phone last Sunday, but his telephone lines have since gone off, and he hasn’t been seen, according to the Executive Secretary of the EPA.
