Prof. Kwabena Dei Ofori-Atta, a Ghanaian lecturer stationed in the US, claimed that Alan Kyerematen, a past contender for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer position, is aware that his chances of success in the 2024 elections as an independent candidate are slim.
Prof. Ofori-Atta stated in a 2023 September 25 interview with UTV that Alan’s sole motivation for running as an independent candidate is to keep the NPP from winning the 2024 elections.
He continued by saying that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who left the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), started his own party, the Convention People’s Party (CPP), to win supporters; Alan should have followed suit if he truly want to become president.
“… Nkrumah became enraged and left his party, but he did not run as an independent for president. He established the CPP and attracted a sizable following. When Paa Willie left Busia’s party, he did not form his own independent party; instead, he established the UNC (United National Convention).
He said in Twi that Alan’s actions “just hurt the NPP, he does not want the party to win the next elections… His thinking is that if the NPP is going to retain power without me as the party’s candidate then the party should collapse” He also said that Alan’s actions demonstrate his ungratefulness because the NPP has done so much for him.
