The Akosombo dam spillage in the Volta Region has raised concerns among the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) on potential health effects.

The spillage has contaminated water sources, posing a major threat to the health and wellbeing of communities living along the Volta River, according to a statement released by GAMLS on Thursday, October 19.

GAMLS requested the Ministry of Health and other pertinent agencies to act right away to address the spillage’s potential effects on public health.

The Volta River Authority (VRA) started the controlled water spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams on September 15, 2023, in response to a persistent rise in the inflow pattern and water level of the Akosombo reservoir. Homes have been flooded as a result of this strategy, and residents of South Tongu, North Tongu, Central Tongu, Asuogyaman, and other impacted localities have been forced to relocate.

During a recent visit to Mepe and the surrounding communities, President Akufo-Addo gave the afflicted people the assurance that the government will take all necessary steps to aid the flood victims.

He emphasized the necessity of providing the victims with quick help while mentioning the creation of an inter-ministerial committee to address flooding-related concerns. Additionally, the committee’s job is to stop similar major catastrophes from happening in the future.

President Akufo-Addo emphasized the development of nine facilities for the displaced, which have received aid from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), and noted the significance of protecting the safety and well-being of people affected by the floods.

He also emphasized the need to consider long-term fixes to stop calamities of the same nature from recurring.

These themes are anticipated to be covered at the three-day retreat, which will serve as a forum for debating solutions to the crisis and ways to improve the nation’s economic future.
