The reasons behind President Nana Akufo-Addo’s choice of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate have been made public, providing insight into a choice that has significantly changed the political landscape of the nation.
Adwoa Boadiwaa, a student, asked a question of President Akufo-Addo on October 26 during the Association International School students’ and teachers recent visit to the nation’s presidential residence, Jubilee House.
He clarified that Dr. Bawumia was selected because of his sincerity, focus on goals, and dedication to attaining team objectives.
The President also said the importance of regional balance and unity in Ghana’s leadership, stating, “In terms of the balance, people from the south, people from the north… I think that for the unity of the country, it is good that we have a leadership where Northerners and Southerners are together so that the country can remain united.”
Furthermore, President Akufo-Addo praised Dr. Bawumia for his honesty and straightforwardness in communication. He expressed a preference for individuals who speak candidly and directly, a quality he admires in Dr. Bawumia.
He added, “He [Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia] is an honest person. He speaks honestly to you. He is not one of those people who you have to guess what they are trying to say, he says what he has to say directly.”
The appointment of Dr. Bawumia as President Akufo-Addo’s running mate first sparked debate and concerns among political watchers and members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). At the time, Dr. Bawumia was not well-known in Ghanaian politics. Akufo-Addo, however, remained true to his decision, and the two of them ran together in the elections of 2008 and 2012, both of which they just missed.
Following their victories in 2016 and 2020, Akufo-Addo-Bawumia have been in office as president and vice president, respectively, for six years and ten months.
Dr. Bawumia was victorious in the Super Delegates Conference, the first round of the NPP primaries, with 629 votes, or a strong 68.15% of the total. Kennedy Agyapong, who received 132 votes, or 14.30% of the total, came in close second.
Bawumia and Agyapong are both going to face a significant test as the November primaries draw near.
To become the NPP’s flagbearer, they need to win over 200,000 delegates from all throughout the nation.
In the general election scheduled for December 2024, the victor of the primaries will square off against John Dramani Mahama of the opposition National Democratic Congress.
Nine days or so remain before the November 4 primaries, at which point both front-runners will launch a final campaign to win over delegates and strengthen their support networks. Members of the party are now bracing themselves for an intense and fiercely competitive bout between these two notable individuals.
Defending the NPP against a National Democratic Congress (NDC) that is poised for resurgence in the 2024 elections will be a formidable task for the victorious candidate. The NPP primary and subsequent race for the general elections in 2024 are expected to inject much energy into Ghana’s political landscape.
