The reasons behind his brother’s divorce from his wife Gifty Gyan have been further clarified by Baffour Gyan, the brother of former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan.
Baffour Gyan said that Asamoah Gyan was the winner of the lawsuit in an interview with Asempa FM, despite what had been reported in the press.
He clarified that five years prior, Asamoah had filed for divorce from Gifty because she had previously been married but had married him nevertheless without telling him. Asamoah investigated the situation in court after learning of it, and it was discovered that Gifty had previously been married, necessitating the annulment of their union.
In fact, Baffour said, the marriage had been dissolved as previously reported. In light of Ghanaian law, which prohibits a woman from being married to two men at the same time, the court determined that Gifty had been married when it rendered its decision today. Consequently, the court declared the marriage to be void and canceled it.
Regarding the assets that were awarded to Gifty Gyan as part of the divorce settlement, Baffour disclosed that Gifty already had ownership of all of the properties because she was the original owner.
“On the matter of the properties when Asamoah and Gifty were together, he bought Gifty and the kids a house in Spintex, so that house was already in Gifty’s name. Gifty also bought a plot of land in Tema to be used as a gas station, that piece of land was also in her name already. And then the Infiniti car,” Baffour stated.
A GHC25,000 monthly allowance for the upkeep of the three children, exclusive of their school tuition, medical and dental treatment, airfare, and other child care expenses, has been granted to Gifty in accordance with the recent ruling.
She also received two houses, one in the UK and the other at Spintex, a plot of land used for a service station, and cars from BMW and Infiniti.
In contrast, Asamoah Gyan has won the case because his attorneys maintained that Gifty’s false disclosure of her prior marriage was made without consent.
Asamoah Gyan was the winner all along, according to Baffour Gyan, who clarified that the news reports had been altered to give the impression that he had lost.
Asamoah Gyan’s attorney, Edwin Kusi-Appiah, has denied allegations that his client was made to hand his ex-wife, Gifty Gyan, a fuel station, two cars, a residence in London, and other assets by the court.
On October 31, 2023, rumors on social media stated that Gyan was mandated by the court to give Gifty GH˖25,000 per month as maintenance and care for their three children.
Kusi-Appiah, however, confirmed that Gifty already owned the aforementioned properties and that Gyan had won the legal battle.
He said that Gyan had attempted to have his marriage to Gifty dissolved because of her previous marriage, which was found out after they were married and made their union void.
“Gyan went to the court with the petition for annulment of his marriage because his wife whom he married in 2013 was married to another person which was not known to him.
“The wife on the other hand argued that the case brought was not true and that the stipulated marriage was a marriage of convenience and asked the court to dissolve the marriage and not annul it. She also asked the court to give her more than six houses, several cars and other things which the court did not grant.”
Mr. Kusi-Appiah continued, saying that the court had also determined that Gifty had been married before she got together with Gyan, and it had gone ahead and dissolved the marriage.
However, there was no particular explanation provided about the GHż25,000 a month that Gyan and his ex-wife Gifty allegedly receive as stipend money for the maintenance and well-being of their three children.
