John Dramani Mahama, the leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the biggest opposition political party, has declared that if his party wins the 2024 elections, he will merge a few ministries in the nation.
Mr. Mahama emphasized that the New Patriotic Party-led administration had established multiple ministries with overlapping duties.
The previous president maintained that these superfluous ministries drain the nation’s finances in addition to being needless.
Mr. Mahama emphasized the NDC’s view that these ministries are unnecessary at a meeting with the Trades Union Congress (TUC) leadership in Accra.
“We will merge ministerial portfolios to prune down the number of ministries drastically. For instance, I don’t see why we have an Aviation Ministry, Railways Ministry, Transport Ministry, and all the other ministries. Local Government Ministry, Business Development Ministry,” he said.
He further asserted that such streamlining would help reduce waste, prevent institutional borrowing, and ensure compliance with internal and external control systems.
“We will reduce waste and cause overruns, institutional borrowing and breaches in public procurement rules. We will ensure compliance in internal and external control systems,” Mahama said.
