According to Prince Obeng Himah, President of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), the Association believes the Teacher Licensure Examination is a commendable endeavor and should not be discontinued.
This comes after John Dramani Mahama, the former president, declared that if he were to run for office again, he would do away with the teacher licensure exam because it is absurd.
Mr. Mahama questioned why education college students are required to write exams throughout their time there and then a licensure exam once they graduate and are prepared to teach.
The Teacher Licensure Examination was launched in 2018 by the National Teaching Council (NTC), a Ministry of Education entity, with the goal of granting licenses to educators who now work or wish to work in the nation’s public pre-tertiary institutions.
The Education Act, 2008 (Act 778) stipulates in Section 12(4) that “The programme of study for pre-tertiary teachers that lead to a licence to teach shall be developed in consultation with the Council.” The Ministry of Education claims that this satisfies that requirement.
Mr Mahama said at a town hall meeting at Wenchi in the Bono Region on Friday, November 17 that “I spoke about the licensure exam in 2020. We will remove the licensure exam. The students write exam throughout the period they are in school and when they leave to work, you ask them to write another examination, it doesn’t make sense.”
However, CETAG President Prince Obeng Himah stated, “In my opinion, it is something that is good and it shouldn’t be canceled,” in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM on Monday, November 20. That’s CETAG. We’ve said that we should carry out the decision we made during a conference two years ago to require admission tests for students wishing to pursue careers as teachers.
