Kissi Agyebeng, the Special Prosecutor, has warned that if his office’s efforts to combat corruption fail, the nation may not be able to win the war on corruption.
As a result, he has called on all branches of government, particularly the judiciary, and Ghanaians to assist his office in its work to ensure that its goals are achieved.
Speaking to journalists in Accra on Wednesday, he said, “We must uphold our institutions and strengthen them, especially our law enforcement agencies. We should not take the relative peace and security we currently enjoy for granted.”
“The OSP must be supported in its work. Should the OSP fail, Ghana would utterly lose the fight against corruption – with its attendant erosion of our democracy,” Mr. Agyebeng stated.
The OSP was established to combat corruption nationwide, with a focus on those who are politically exposed.
Due to unsuccessful court proceedings, the agency has seen multiple defeats in its battle.
Additionally, the Special Prosecutor declared that his office currently employs 249 people in total.
The special prosecutor declared, “We are excited that we have our full complement of the foundation staff seated now,” despite the fact that it was four years behind schedule.
Along with revealing that his office was prepared to expand, he said, “we will be seeking approval for clearance to hire more personnel,” with a focus on Kumasi, Tamale, and Takoradi.
He emphasized further that the office was determined to fulfill its role as the Republic’s premier anti-corruption body, which included looking into corruption and offenses related to it, prosecuting suspected criminals, recovering assets, and taking action to stop corruption.
