Enraged supporters of disqualified parliamentary candidate Michael Nii Yarboi wrecked havoc on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) headquarters in Accra in a disorganized and violent turn of events.
In an attempt to protest Mr. Yarboi’s exclusion from the party’s parliamentary primary in the Odododiodioo Constituency, the irate supporters blocked roads and left trash all over the place.
On October 13, 2023, the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) made a decision based on an investigation into previous violent incidents that occurred during the aspirant vetting process.
The media was informed by eyewitnesses that “Don” is preferred by the supporters due to his community service, which includes sponsoring multiple students.
In the midst of the chaos, the police have stepped in to restore order.
The Special Committee’s report, which was intended to look into the violence that took place on Friday, October 13, 2023, during the vetting of parliamentary candidates, is what led the FEC to decide to disqualify Mr. Yarboi.
“…Mr Michael Nii Yarboi is not qualified by the provisions of article 41 (8) (b) of the constitution of the NDC and, therefore, cannot contest in the Parliamentary elections in Odododiodioo Constituency,” the FEC said.
The FEC further announced that all expenses associated with the damage at the center will be shared by the other two candidates, Alfred Nii Kotei Ashie and Emmanuel Nii Okai Laryea, whose supporters were allegedly in charge of the property damage during the vetting process.
It expressed regret to journalist Miss Akosua Otchere for being mistreated during the screening process and promised to work with her to cover all of her medical expenses.
As a result, the FEC has instructed its election directorate to set up the Odododiodioo Constituency parliamentary primaries as soon as possible.
