Galamsey queen Aisha Huang was found guilty of mining without a license and given a four and a half year prison sentence along with a GH¢48,000 fine.
After hearing arguments from the prosecution and defense, the judge declared her guilty.
The judge could only sentence her to four years because the previous legal regime only allowed for five years, even though she had been released on similar charges before.
In 2018, Aisha Huang, who was connected to illicit mining operations in the Ashanti Region, was deported and the charges against her were dropped.
She did, however, supposedly return covertly and carry out the same actions.
The Attorney General made the decision to prosecute her for both previous and new offenses in October 2022.
Aisha Huang’s operation of a mining support services company and her involvement in illicit mining at Bepotenten in the Ashanti Region were both claimed by the prosecution.
She entered a plea of guilty to prohibited re-entry under the Immigration Act on May 3, 2023, after first entering a plea of not guilty to several charges.
