The Convention People’s Party (CPP) national executive council (NEC) has unanimously voted to remove all of its national executives from office.
The party demanded the resignation or dismissal of all national executives at a meeting held in Kumasi, the regional capital of the Ashanti people. Widespread discontent with the leadership’s performance was voiced by party members nationwide, prompting calls for executive resignations.
There was a good deal of disagreement during the meeting; some participants asked to have the national chairperson removed.
In response, regional chairmen, a member of the council of elders, regional secretaries, regional organizers, and representatives of women and youth make up the 13-member interim body that the national executive council has formed.
In a media interview, Nana Yaa Jantuah confirmed the decision and announced her resignation as the party’s general secretary.
“I’m gone. I think I’ve done what I have to do. I’m no longer the general secretary of the CPP,” Jantuah said. “In due course, I will let everybody know where my political allegiance will be. For now, it’s time for family and friends.”
“I’m going to spend time with my family and friends. For now, I’m going to concentrate on my business. They think some other people can do it better. In political parties, you do not hold on to things. I have done what I have to do these past three years, and everybody has seen it.
“If my people say they do not want me, I can’t force myself on them,” Jantuah said.
Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong-Kumankumah, the party’s chairperson, has since rejected the NEC’s ruling and maintained her position. She calls the action improper procedurally.
Speaking to journalists following the events, CPP presidential candidate for 2020 Ivor Greenstreet advocated for additional measures to guarantee the party emerges stronger in the run-up to the 2024 general election.
