The MTN Skills Academy, the first of its kind in Ghana, was established by the MTN Ghana Foundation with the goal of equipping over 100,000 young Ghanaians with digital skills by 2025.
In an effort to close the skills gap in digital technology and the unemployment rate, the Academy will use partnerships and technology to develop and expand skills. The objective is to teach Ghanaian youth without experience the necessary skills for the future.
The ongoing USD 25 million Ghana ICT Hub, which focuses on investing in, developing, and nurturing Africa’s expanding youth population, is enhanced by the addition of the MTN Skills Academy.
Young people between the ages of 15 and 24 will receive career guidance, training in digital and financial skills, job placement requirements, work readiness, and mentorship through the MTN Skills Academy.
Two partner ICT hubs in Greater Accra are working together with the MTN Ghana Foundation. The hubs will assist in enlisting young people without jobs to enroll in MTN Skills Academy courses. They will also establish a favorable atmosphere that will enable young people without jobs who reside in and around the designated areas to access the program online.
Adwoa Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer at MTN Ghana, emphasized during the launch that it is imperative that all relevant parties examine the necessity of providing the youth with up-to-date digital skills.
She said, “Technology is changing the world of work and digital skills is now becoming indispensable to our everyday lives. Thus, it is important for us to be intentional about the way we train and equip the youth for the future. In this regard, we must not only focus on digital skills training but must also be interested in job creation as well as the provision of facilities such as skills hubs that will equip Ghana and Africa’s human capital with appropriate skills in the long term. That is why we have launched the MTN Skills Academy.”
Adwoa Wiafe further urged beneficiaries to leverage the platform to showcase their talents and skills to earn a livelihood and to position themselves to lead the progress of the country and the African continent.
The Ministry of Education’s Mr. Kingsley Boakye praised MTN for taking the initiative. According to him, the MTN Skills Academy’s founding is consistent with the Ministry’s goals of empowering Ghanaian youth through skill development. Additionally, he disclosed that the government was developing an ICT Education Policy that will be released shortly.
As the guest speaker for the event, Dr. Stephane Nwolley, CEO of Mpontu Technologies, emphasized the importance of the MTN Skills Academy in preparing Ghana’s young people for the plethora of opportunities the digital world offers.
Executives from MTN Ghana, representatives from the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Educations Service, recruitment agencies, some MTN Bright Scholarship recipients, and Mamfe Girls Senior High School students who will benefit from a robotic center that MTN is building in the school were present at the event.
