The credibility of the results of candidates who took the most recent West Africa Senior Schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE) has been questioned by former president John Dramani Mahama.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag bearer claims that the recent student exercise was marred by malpractices and that the consequences will eventually affect the entire country.

As part of his “Building Ghana Tour” through the Central region, the former President visited the Mfantseman constituency. He claimed that certain invigilators assisted students in answering the questions rather than making sure candidates completed independent work.

His accusations of cheating come after Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education, declared that the 2023 WASSCE results are the best the country has seen since 2015.

“In many places, they let the children cheat. You go to places and the teachers are conniving with the students to cheat. The effect will be seen later,” John Mahama averred.

He said the implication of the development will hit the nation sooner or later.

“You certify these children saying they are of this standard either the BECE or SSCE, and that child will use that certificate, go abroad to a school and they will find out that your qualification is not up to the standard you say it is,” he indicated.

The goal of John Mahama’s Building Ghana Tour is to improve the NDC’s People’s Manifesto for the 2024 election by gathering input from the public and professional associations.

Teachers in the Mfantseman constituency, who have been featured in the majority of the six regions toured so far, bemoaned the scarcity of textbooks following the government’s alteration of the curriculum years ago.
