The National Democratic Congress (NDC), which is in opposition, has reaffirmed that it is against the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to forgo using indelible ink for voter identification during the general elections of 2024.
Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the opposition political party, emphasized the significance of the indelible ink in previous elections during a press conference on Monday, January 8, at the NDC headquarters in Adabraka, Accra. He also urged the EC to reevaluate its plan to do away with it.
“The NDC strongly opposes the removal of indelible ink because it visibly, transparently, and physically verifies voters in addition to biometric verification. Indelible ink marks and identifies voters to discourage and prevent them from engaging in multiple voting, particularly when there is apathy,”Mr Nketiah stated.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia clarified the NDC’s stance on maintaining the integrity of elections and its resolve to tackle important problems that impact Ghana’s democratic process.
He emphasized that in order to guarantee peaceful elections in December 2024, a moral society must rise up and take proactive steps.
He claimed that in order to lessen the likelihood of violence during the elections in December, religious leaders, traditional authorities, and civil society organizations needed to start urging the state institutions in charge of holding the elections to carry out their responsibilities in a fair, honest, and professional manner.
According to Mr. Asiedu Nketia, moral society should demand the actions required to support free and fair elections now, rather than waiting until November or December.
“The officials serving in these institutions, security, judiciary and the Electoral Commission must constantly be reminded of their oaths of office”, Asiedu Nketiah stated.
Mr. Nketia expressed worry about the economic hardships Ghanaians are facing and forecast a challenging year because of the high taxes levied on both individuals and businesses. He blamed poor management for the previous year’s hardships and demanded government action to lessen the load on the populace.
