NPP Parliamentary primaries: 28 MPs to go unopposed

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) will field 28 members of parliament in the upcoming parliamentary primaries, all of whom are running unopposed for re-election. It’s quite the political spectacle that looks like it came from a screenplay.

These unopposed members of parliament, who range in experience from seasoned veterans to up-and-coming figures, have found themselves in a peculiar situation as the political drumbeat builds toward the January 27, 2024, primaries. It seems as though their fates have already been decided before the race even starts.

Following the screening of 373 candidates, the NPP has released the exclusive list of these unopposed candidates.

The members who are not facing opposition are the following: MP Lydia Seyram Alhassan, First Deputy Majority Whip for Ayawaso West Wuogon; MP Patrick Yaw Boamah for Okaikoi Central; MP Samuel Abu Jinapor for Damongo; MP Bright Yelviedong Baligi for Lambussie; MP Ambrose Dery for Nandom and Interior Minister; MP Assin South and Deputy Minister of Education, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour; and MP Festus Awuah Kwofie for Upper Denkyira East.

The others are Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, MP for Bosomtwe and Minister of Education, and Dr. Bryan Yaw Acheampong, MP for Abetifi and Minister of Food and Agriculture.

Michael Okyere Baafi, the MP for New Juaben South, is also the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry. Frederick Obeng Adom, the MP for Upper West Akyem, is the Deputy Minister of Transport. Dr. John Ampontuah Kumah, the MP for Ejisu, is the Deputy Minister of Finance. Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, the MP for Effiduase, is the MP for Offinso South, is the MP for Akrofuom, is the MP for Tano South, is the MP for Benjamin Yeboah Sekyere, is the MP for Dormaa East, is the MP for Paul Apreku Twum-Barimah, and is the MP for Sefwi Akontombra, Alex Tetteh Djornobuah.

The others are Alhaji Iddrisu Habib, the Second Deputy Majority Chief Whip and MP for Tolon; Mohammed Amin Adam, the MP for Karaga and Deputy Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance; Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli, the MP for Gushegu and Deputy Minister of Transport; Thomas Mbomba, the MP for Tatale/Sanguli and Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways; and Martin Kwaku Adjei-Mensah Korsah, the MP for Techiman South and Deputy Minister of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development.
