Parents Associations (PAs) are now authorized by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to hold fundraising events in favor of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.
The Parents Teachers Association levies were discontinued by the government in 2019 as a result of numerous complaints regarding the excessive levies imposed on students.
As a result, associations were reorganized into Parent Associations.
The Ghana Education Service has approved the recently released Guidelines Document for Parents Associations in All Pre-tertiary Schools, which acknowledges the important roles that PTAs play in education.
GES stresses that parents associations should run on their own, without interference from staff or administration at the school.
They are not allowed to charge students or pupils any fees, even though they are encouraged to look into different ways to raise money for school development.
Parent Associations have the authority to carry out initiatives and offer welfare programs and incentive packages to teachers and staff in order to support them.
Furthermore, each parent or guardian is free to contribute or donate to a school in any way they see fit.
According to GES, school administration is free to join Parents Associations without being accountable for the decisions made, even though they should not sign on to them.
Parents Associations must, however, submit their annual plans and activities for approval to the school administration.
In addition, there will be yearly audits of Parents Association accounts, and audit reports need to be turned in to Regional Directors in order for them to be sent to the Director General of Ghana Education Service.
GES anticipates that the new regulations will establish a calm and orderly atmosphere in which parent associations can function to assist the expansion and development of schools in order to enable inclusive and high-quality education.
