Samuel Atta Akyea, the Member of Parliament for Akim Abuakwa South, has pleaded with Ken Ofori-Atta, the Finance Minister, to think about resigning for the benefit of the government as well as for his own sake.

The persistent economic difficulties facing the nation have contributed to the months-long surge in calls for Ofori-Atta’s resignation.

Particularly vocal in its criticism of the Finance Minister, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has laid blame for the current budgetary woes on him time and time again.

During a Face to Face interview on Tuesday, January 16, Mr. Atta-Akyea underlined the significance of self-evaluation for Mr. Ofori-Atta. He recommended that he take into account his stance for both his own and the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) welfare.

“For me, what is very frightening is the fact that you have a whole army of people saying look you’ve had enough…I think that that could be a way for him to relax. Look at all the burdens on one man. So it is his individual decision to make as to whether he should  go or he should continue.”

To make matters worse, Atta-Akyea said that Ofori-Atta’s resignation might even help to calm things down for the country and the government.

“He should look at himself and look at the troubles that everybody believes, I mean when he is not there then the nation will have peace…He should save himself and save the government and have his peace because he needs it,” Mr Atta Akyea said.

Mr. Atta Akyea also took aim at those who attribute the nation’s economic problems to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

He said that while the economy is not doing well, it is “cruel” and “unkind” for anyone to blame Dr. Bawumia for the economic problems facing the Akufo-Addo administration.

Mr. Atta Akyea maintained that the vice president was preventing him from making certain critical decisions for the nation because of a very serious adversarial role.

Ghanaians have mounted pressure on Ken Ofori-Atta to resign as Finance Minister with his critics citing him as responsible for Ghana’s current economic challenges.

To restore public confidence in the Ghanaian economy, some members of the Majority Caucus in Parliament mounted pressure on President Nana Akufo-Addo to remove Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta and Minister of State Charles Adu Boahen from their positions.

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) group of MPs has declared that until both men leave the government, they will not engage in any more government business involving the Ministry of Finance or deal with the Finance Minister or the Minister of State for Finance.

The caucus spokesman and MP for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, told the media in Parliament on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, that the action will prevent the economy from collapsing.

“We have had occasion to defend allegations of conflict of interest, lack of confidence and trust against leadership of our Finance Ministry. The recent developments within our economy are of great concern to the greater majority of members of our caucus and our constituents,” Appiah-Kubi said.
