VP Bawumia confers with Estonian President, Prime Minister in Tallinn

On Wednesday, January 24, 2024, in the Estonian capital of Tallinn, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia held bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Kaja Kallas and President Alar Karis.

During a three-day working visit, Dr. Bawumia is in Estonia, which is recognized as one of the world’s most technologically advanced nations.

After arriving in the capital on Wednesday afternoon, the vice president immediately met with the prime minister and president.

During the two meetings, the hosts discussed how their nation’s investment in digitalization and their dedication to implementing it for over 20 years have led to a significant economic transformation. Dr. Bawumia also shared Ghana’s digitalization story over the past seven years, emphasizing how it is already having a positive impact on the country, particularly in fighting corruption, improving people’s lives, and affecting government revenue.

Even though Estonia’s digitalization process, known as e-Estonia, began years before Ghana’s did, it is interesting to note that the two nations’ digitalization frameworks are based on their digital versions of national identity cards.

Other areas similar are digital address system, online government services; labelled e-Government in Estonia and Ghana.Gov in Ghana, as  financial inclusion, which has significantly boosted online banking and mobile money transactions, respectively.

Later in the day, Dr. Bawumia held  talks with officials at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digitalization.

The Ghanaian delegation, led by Dr. Bawumia, and officials of the Ministry led by Luukas Ilves, Undersecretary for Digital Transformation, Government CIO, had extensive discussions on the impact of digitalisation on economic transformation.

While the Estonian officials shared their experiences on the impact of their country’s digitalisation on many aspects of their economy, including jobs, services and taxation, Dr. Bawumia also shared Ghana’s story of how the digitalisation of government services is boosting efficiency,  helping in the fight against corruption and also boosting government revenue generation.

The second leg of Dr. Bawumia’s working visit continues on Thursday January 25.
