In the parliamentary primaries held last Saturday, ten ministers and deputy ministers seeking reelection to parliament on the ticket of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) were defeated.
28 sitting members were defeated overall in the contest.
Effia’s Member of Parliament (MP) for the Western Region, Joseph Cudjoe, is the Minister of Public Enterprises; Freda Prempeh is the Minister of Santation and Water Resources and MP for Tano North in the Ahafo Region; and Hajia Lariba Zuweira Abudu is the Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection and MP for Walewale in the North East Region.
Mr. Cudjoe was defeated in his bid for a fourth term by Isaac Yaw Nyarko Boamah, a lawyer and officer of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Secretary to the GRA Board.
Dr. Gideon Boako, the vice president’s spokesman, defeated Freda Prempeh, and Dr. Kabiru Mahama, the vice president’s technical adviser, defeated Hajia Zuweira Abudu.
The two Deputy Ministers of Health, Tina Naa Ayeley Mensah, MP for Weija-Gbawe in the Greater Accra Region, and Mahama Asei Seini, MP for Daboya/Mankarigu in the Savannah Region, are among the seven Deputy Ministers who were unsuccessful in their bid for reelection.
Gifty Twum-Ampofo, a Deputy Minister of Education, is one of the others. She is the MP for Abuakwa North in the Eastern Region; Ama Pomaa Boateng, a Deputy Minister of Communications and Digitalization; Collins Ntim, a Deputy Minister of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development; Bright Wireko-Brobbey, a Deputy Minister of Labor Relations; and Moses Anim, a Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Acquaculture Development, who represents Trobu.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Coastal Development Authority Jerry Ahmed Shaibu defeated Tina Mensah; former Savannah Region Deputy Minister Samuel Tika defeated Mr. Seini; CEO of Export and Import Bank, Ghana, Lawrence Agyinsam defeated Mr. Wireko-Brobbey; and Ms. Boateng and Mr. Ntim lost their reelection campaigns to Frank Owusu Achiaw and Fred Kyei Asamoah, respectively.
Among the 28 current Members of Parliament who failed to win reelection are these Ministers and Deputies.
In Dome-Kwabenya, Michael Oquaye Jr., the CEO of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, emerged victorious in his third attempt against Sarah Adwoa Safo. Meanwhile, Eugene Boakye Antwi, the Member of Parliament for Subin in the Ashanti Region and a pivotal figure in the NPP’s efforts to remove Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta, was defeated by Kofi Obiri Yeboah.
Isaac Kwame Asiamah (Atwima Mponua), Sheila Bartels (Ablekuma North), Dr. Adomako Kissi (Anyaa Sowutuom), Kwasi Owusu Afrifa-Mensah (Amasaman), and John Benam (Zabzugu) are among the other candidates who lost their attempts to win reelection.
The remaining individuals are: Emmanuel Kwasi Gyamfi (Odotobri), Emmanuel Adjei Anhwere (Atwima-Nwabiagya South), Samuel Erickson Abakah (Shama), Elvis Morris Donkor (Abura Asebu Kwamankese), Yves Hanson Nortey (Tema Central), Akwasi Darko Boateng (Bosome Freho), and George Kwabena Obeng Takyi (Manso Nkwanta).
